Arrest Made in Chattogram: Awami League Leader Titu Arrested with Weapons for Firing on Protesters

Police have arrested Awami League leader Mostafa Kamal Tipu on charges of opening fire on student and public protesters during the July-August movement. He was apprehended along with a cache of illegal weapons.

Tipu was arrested on Tuesday night following a raid on his business establishment, ‘Ayan Enterprise,’ located in the Agrabad area of Double Mooring Police Station.

Seized Weapons and Charges

During the raid, police recovered the following:

• A double-barreled shotgun

• 56 rounds of various brands of ammunition

• Four 12-bore cartridges

• Five rubber cartridges

Aminur Rashid, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of the CMP Public Relations Branch, confirmed the details to the press. Tipu has been charged under the Arms Act and presented before the court.

Police Investigation Details

Police stated that they possess photo and video evidence showing Tipu openly firing bullets during the student-public movement.

He went into hiding shortly after the August 5th events but recently re-emerged. Authorities received a tip that he was conducting “prohibited political activities” from his business premises, leading to the raid and his arrest.

Political Background

Mostafa Kamal Tipu is a resident of Agrabad Nazirpara Mogpukurpar area. He was a former leader of the Double Mooring Thana Chhatra League before becoming involved in mainstream Awami League politics.

His political affiliations shifted over time:

• He was initially a follower of former City Awami League General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin.

• He later joined the group of former Awami League MP MA Latif from the Port-Patenga area.

• Most recently, he identified himself as a supporter of former minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel.

A police official confirmed that on August 4th of last year, Tipu was seen openly firing upon students and the public during the anti-discrimination movement near the New Market area of the city.
