Mysterious Death in the Halda River: Giant Catla Fish Found Decomposed
A massive, partially decomposed Catla fish—a key species among the fresh water carp found in Bangladesh’s Halda River, a vital breeding ground—has been recovered.
The fish measured approximately 26 inches in length and weighed an estimated 20 kilograms, with an age approximated at 12 years. No significant signs of external injury were found on the body.
Cause of Death
Md. Tofazzal Hossain Fahim, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer for Rauzan, confirmed on Wednesday (October 29) that the fish likely died due to old age (natural causes).
The deceased fish was first recovered the previous night (October 28) by the river guard, Rowshangir Alam, from the Azim Ghat area of the Halda River.
Examination and Burial
Local residents first spotted the fish floating near Azim Ghat around 11:00 PM and promptly notified the Fisheries Department. The Fisheries Officer arrived at the scene around 12:15 AM to complete the inquest.
Due to the advanced stage of decomposition (more than half of the body was rotten), a thorough internal organ examination was not possible. Officials estimate the fish had been dead for at least two to three days. Based on the inquest, the heavily decomposed Catla is presumed to have been a male fish.
Following the examination, the partially decomposed fish was buried on the banks of the Halda River with the help of local residents.
