Arrest in Bhaluka: Gonojagoron Moncho Leader Abul Kalam Azad Apprehended

Police in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, have arrested Abul Kalam Azad, a prominent leader of the Gonojagoron Moncho movement.

The arrest took place on Thursday (October 30) afternoon, right from the police station premises. He has been charged and sent to court in connection with a case involving the vandalization of a BNP office.

Abul Kalam Azad (75) is the son of the late Moulvi Habibullah Master of Bashil village in the Upazila.

Background and Context

Azad was a front-line leader of the Gonojagoron Moncho, an influential movement formed during the tenure of the previous administration. During the movement, he delivered speeches at Shahbagh, publicly speaking out against leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP, including Abdul Quader Molla, Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mujahid, and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

The Arrest

The arrest occurred unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon when Abul Kalam Azad went to the police station to renew the suspended license for his personal pistol.

Upon learning of his presence, activists from Jamaat and Shibir gathered at the police station, identified him, and informed the Officer-in-Charge, leading to his immediate arrest.

Reactions and Charges

Saifullah Pathan Fazlu, Ameer of the Bhaluka Upazila Jamaat, expressed gratitude for the arrest:

“Our leaders were innocent. False movements were organized against them, set-up tribunals were formed, and they were martyred. We are thankful to the police for arresting this accomplice.”

Humayun Kabir, OC of Bhaluka Model Police Station, confirmed the details:

“Jamaat and Shibir leaders came and lodged a complaint, after which he was arrested and sent to court in connection with the case of vandalizing the BNP office.”
