NCP Leader Calls Referendum ‘Normal Process’ to Implement July Charter
Hasanat Abdullah, Chief Organizer for the Southern Region of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), stated that a referendum is a normal process for the implementation of the July Charter. He criticized those who initially signed the Charter but are now claiming that its original provisions are no longer valid.
He made these comments while delivering a speech as the Chief Guest at a coordination meeting organized by the Patuakhali District Nagorik Party at the District Shilpakala Academy on Saturday evening.
Hasanat Abdullah said: “Many are now saying that what was in the Charter is no longer there. We said before—’Zarina will make a family with Sakina’—meaning those who pledged to walk together are now backing away. The July Charter must be shown, and it must be implemented.”
Criticism Regarding the July Certificate
Abdullah strongly criticized the idea of seeking a “July Certificate” from the current President:
He continued: “Now, we are allegedly required to obtain the July Certificate from Chuppu [President Mohammad Shahabuddin]—under whose watch two thousand people were martyred and hundreds injured during the Hasina era. If we have to take our July Certificate from Hasina’s era’s Chuppu, then it would be better for all of us to die together. No martyr’s family or injured person will agree to take a certificate from Chuppu.”
He appealed directly to Dr. Muhammad Yunus, asking him to “quickly give the order for the July Charter. The people now want to see its implementation.”
Vision for the Future Coalition
The NCP leader outlined the basis for their future political alliance:
He stated: “Our alliance will consist of political forces that believe in the aspirations and reforms post-July ’24, and have confidence in independence and sovereignty. They will play a role in the country’s reconstruction.”
The meeting was chaired by Zahirul Islam Musa, Joint Member Secretary and Chief Coordinator of the District Committee of the NCP. Special guests included Advocate Mujahidul Islam Shahin, Divisional Secretary of NCP’s Barisal Division and Assistant Attorney General; Dr. Mahmuda Alam Mitu, Joint Chief Organizing Secretary; and Faisal Mahmud Shanto, Joint Member Secretary. Local NCP leaders also addressed the gathering.
The Chief Guest urged party workers to expedite party activities in the Patuakhali district by forming Student Shokti (Student Power) and Jubo Shokti (Youth Power) committees alongside the NCP unit.
