The wheels are finally turning for the much-anticipated student union elections (Shaksu) at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
In a formal step towards democracy on campus, the university administration officially announced the formation of a powerful 13-member Election Commission on Monday evening. Heading the team as the Chief Election Commissioner is Professor Dr. Abul Mukit Mokauddas from the Industrial and Production Engineering department.
The formation of the commission, announced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A M Sarwar Uddin Chowdhury, signals the serious intent to hold the crucial student body polls.
The announcement was met with immediate, vocal enthusiasm from students, who weren’t shy about pushing for a timeline. They demanded the Vice-Chancellor ensure the full election roadmap—the schedule—is released by Wednesday.
The Vice-Chancellor responded by promising quick action, assuring students that the new Commission will work with them to declare the roadmap “very soon.” This sets the stage for a democratic exercise that will give students a voice in the university’s governance
