A scene of vigilante justice played out in the Dhaka court complex today as the alleged mastermind behind a massive student visa scam, Khairul Bashar Bahar, was attacked by his victims right outside the courtroom.
Bashar, the Chairman of BSB Global Network, stands accused of swindling students out of an astounding Tk 4,000 crore (approximately $363 million) under the guise of sending them abroad for higher education.
Knowing the sheer number of victims, police took extraordinary precautions, trying to sneak the high-security inmate into the courtroom via a quiet back route. It didn’t work.
The Ambush:
As he was being hustled to the door of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s courtroom, several victims—who had gathered after hearing he would be present—spotted him and lunged, briefly overpowering security to deliver physical blows before police whisked Bashar into safety.
Despite the courtroom drama, his legal team pressed on with bail applications in 99 cases. The court showed some leniency, granting bail in 14 cases, but denied it in a staggering 75 others.
The incident underscores the raw, intense frustration of hundreds of families who have lost their life savings and their children’s future to the colossal fraud.
