The political heat intensified today as Naseeruddin Patwary, the head of the National Citizen’s Party (NCP), launched a blistering verbal attack, putting both the current establishment and the traditional opposition on notice.
The Asif Nazrul Gauntlet: Patwary threw down a direct challenge to high-profile figure Dr. Asif Nazrul, questioning his motives and his commitment to the “July Charter”—the reform agenda that followed the recent mass movement. Essentially, Patwary told Nazrul: “You wanted power; now that you have influence, prove you’re on the people’s side. Stop delaying, and deliver the Charter.”
A Stage for Dr. Yunus: The NCP leader demanded that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus should make a grand, symbolic gesture: take his cabinet to the Shaheed Minar (Martyrs’ Monument) and publicly announce the Charter’s implementation. This, Patwary insists, must be done with the families of those killed in the July movement present, legitimizing the new government’s actions through the martyrs’ sacrifice.
Scorched-Earth Politics: Patwary’s speech was a broad swipe against the entire political landscape:
• He rejected the “rotten” 1972 constitution, blaming it for past atrocities.
• He issued a stark warning to politicians who resist reform, threatening them with “ballot revolution” and public trial.
• He dismissed the interim government’s newly formed election commission as “incompetent” and accused the traditional opposition (BNP-Jamaat) of being insincere and having divided loyalties.
The NCP, Patwary concluded, is the true voice of the people because, unlike others, it refuses to rely on the military or foreign embassies for power—a bold claim designed to appeal to public sentiment weary of backroom deals.
