Russia Developing New Nuclear Cruise Missile with Speed Three Times that of Sound: Putin
Russia has initiated work on developing a new generation of nuclear-powered cruise missiles. These nuclear missiles are expected to travel at speeds more than three times the speed of sound. Russian President Vladimir Putin made this announcement on Tuesday (November 4th) during a state awards ceremony in Moscow.
The Announcement and New Technology
At a ceremony held in the Kremlin, Putin presented state awards to scientists and engineers involved in the development of Russia’s Burevestnik nuclear missile and the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle.
• New Missile Speed: Putin stated that Russia has now begun work on creating a new generation of weapons based on powerful units like the Burevestnik and Poseidon. The new-generation cruise missile’s speed will be more than three times the speed of sound and is expected to reach the hypersonic level in the future.
• Purpose: Putin emphasized that Russia is not a threat to any country. “Like other nuclear powers, we are simply improving our defense capabilities,” he stated.
Strategic Significance
Putin highlighted the historical significance of the Burevestnik project for the safety of the Russian people and the country. He noted that the missile system will help maintain a strategic balance for decades to come.
He also announced that the test of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile was successfully completed this year, and it will be deployed for combat next year.
Background on Burevestnik and Poseidon
Last month, during a meeting with military officials, Putin disclosed that the decisive test of the Burevestnik missile had been completed. He claimed the missile flew for approximately 15 hours, covering a distance of 14,000 kilometers.
Putin first announced the development of the Burevestnik and Poseidon systems in 2018, describing them as nuclear-powered weapons systems with infinite range and unique characteristics.
