BNP Standing Committee Meets Today

BNP Standing Committee Meets Today to Finalize Single Candidates for 200 Seats

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to finalize an initial list of single candidates for approximately 200 constituencies, setting aside potential seats for its political allies. To this end, the party’s Standing Committee members are meeting today.

Members of the party’s organizational teams have also been called to the Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. Following the Standing Committee meeting, the list of single candidates may be handed over to them after a discussion.

Meeting Schedule

• Standing Committee Meeting: Scheduled to begin at 12:30 PM today (Monday) at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.

• Organizational Team Meeting: A subsequent meeting with members of the organizational teams is expected around 2:30 PM.

In both meetings, the party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, will participate virtually.

Candidate Delay and July Charter Controversy

It is understood that the process was delayed last month due to the controversy surrounding the ‘July National Charter 2025’ implementation recommendations.

• On October 28th, the National Consensus Commission formed by the Interim Government submitted its recommendations for implementing the Charter.

• The BNP was reportedly highly displeased because these recommendations did not align with the Charter signed by the BNP and 25 other political parties on October 17th.

Tarique Rahman held two rounds of meetings with Standing Committee members last Tuesday and Wednesday, where the BNP decided to observe the situation. Standing Committee leaders felt that any immediate reaction on the streets could be exploited by a third party to sabotage the election. Consequently, the party’s position on the Charter’s implementation was stated via a press conference.

Party sources indicate that due to these reasons, the single candidate announcement planned for last month was not possible. Consequently, the Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, has called for today’s Standing Committee meeting.

Party Leader Statements

• Tarique Rahman’s Recent Statement (Sunday): The nomination process for BNP-nominated or supported candidates for 300 seats in the upcoming National Parliamentary Election is nearing its final stage. All possible preparations for participating in the highly anticipated election are complete. We will announce the names of the party’s nominated candidates for various seats in phases very soon. He urged all nationalists to work unitedly to ensure the victory of whomever the party nominates in any constituency.

• Standing Committee Members (Sunday Night): Two Standing Committee members told Jugantor that Monday’s meeting was called specifically for the nomination issue. The single candidates are nearly finalized. The final seat-specific single candidates will be determined after discussion with the organizational teams. An announcement from the party is expected very soon.

Organizational secretaries called to the Gulshan office, including Mahbubur Rahman Shamim (Chittagong Divisional Organizing Secretary) and Akon Kuddusur Rahman (Barisal Divisional Assistant Organizing Secretary), confirmed they were abruptly asked to be at the Chairperson’s political office.
