The government has stated that there is no scope to increase the number of posts in the 48th Special BCS, even though doctors are currently protesting for more appointments.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare made this announcement in a press release today, Wednesday.
Doctors have been actively protesting, demanding an increase in the number of posts for the 48th Special BCS. Yesterday, Tuesday, they staged a demonstration and blockaded the road in front of the National Press Club in the capital.

In response to the protests, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s statement highlighted that, considering the need to deliver healthcare to the public and address the doctor shortage, recommendations have already been made to appoint 3,286 doctors through the 48th Special BCS. This includes 3,006 Assistant Surgeons and 280 Assistant Dental Surgeons.

An additional 5,000 newly passed doctors have joined them in the last few months. In the interest of justice and to keep government job opportunities open for approximately 43,000 waiting and newly qualified doctors, there is no scope to further increase the posts in the 48th Special BCS.”

Breakdown of Vacancies and Ongoing Recruitment
The press release further clarified the situation:
• The initial decision was to recommend candidates for 3,000 posts in the 48th Special BCS, though a later request was made to increase this by 500. Ultimately, the government increased the posts by 286.
• Currently, there are 4,837 vacant posts for Assistant Surgeons and 150 vacant posts for Assistant Dental Surgeons in the BCS Health Cadre.
• 4,523 doctors are already in the process of being appointed through other ongoing BCS exams.
The Ministry concluded that once the candidates recommended in the 48th Special BCS and those from other ongoing BCS join, there will be no further vacant posts. To accommodate more doctors afterward, new posts will need to be created. The recruitment processes for the 44th, 45th, 46th, and 47th BCS exams are also currently underway.
