Major Fire Destroys Shops and Godowns in Nabinagar Market, Estimated Loss of Half a Crore Taka

A devastating fire broke out in the Boro Bazar (Main Market) of Nabinagar Upazila, Brahmanbaria. The fire, which started around 5:30 AM on Monday (November 3rd) at the Jamal Mia Market adjacent to Sonali Bank, completely destroyed a tea stall and three godowns storing essential grocery items. Affected businessmen claim that goods worth approximately half a crore Taka have been destroyed.

Incident Details and Fire Service Response

Eyewitnesses and local businessmen reported that the fire started at the Jamal Mia Market around 5:30 AM on Monday. The market’s night guard noticed the fire and immediately informed the market owner, Jamal Mia.

The market owner quickly called the fire service emergency number. A unit from the Nabinagar Fire Service rapidly arrived at the scene.

Jamal Mia (Market Owner) said: “These godowns were used by wholesale retailers in the market and contained essential commodities. The godowns belonging to Narayan Shah, Swapan Chandra Saha, and Akhtar Hossain, among others, were damaged by the fire.”

Damage and Allegations

Affected businessman Akhtar Hossain reported that goods in two of his four shutters were burned, causing a loss of approximately 15 to 20 lakh Taka. He alleged that the damage was exacerbated because the fire service took over an hour to set up their water line.

Debabrata Sarkar, Station Officer of Nabinagar Fire Service, stated:

“Upon receiving the news from locals, fire service personnel quickly reached the site, laid pipes into the river, and managed to bring the fire under control after about an hour of effort. It is preliminarily suspected that the fire originated from an electrical short circuit in Narayan Saha’s shop.”

Despite the swift action of the Fire Service, three to four godowns, which were used to store essential wholesale grocery goods, were already gutted. However, the Fire Service’s prompt intervention successfully protected nearby shops and crucial institutions, including Sonali Bank.
