Supermoon to Grace the Skies Tonight: The ‘Beaver Moon’ is the Second of the Year’s Three
The largest and brightest moon of the year, known as a Supermoon, will be visible in the night sky this week. Tonight marks the occurrence of this special astronomical phenomenon, which is the second of three consecutive Supermoons in 2025.
Tonight is also the traditional ‘Bonfire Night’ celebration in the United Kingdom, making it a magical convergence of light, sparkle, and color.
The Science Behind the Supermoon
A Supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit (known as perigee) at the time of a Full Moon. During this period, the moon appears significantly larger and brighter than it does at other times. Consequently, the nights this week will be slightly more luminous and captivating.
• Elliptical Orbit: The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not perfectly circular but slightly elliptical (oval-shaped). Due to this, the Moon sometimes comes closer to Earth (Perigee), and sometimes moves farther away (Apogee).
• Distance: At perigee, the Moon is about 220,000 miles from Earth, while at apogee, the distance is nearly 250,000 miles.
• Definition: A moon is termed a ‘Supermoon’ if it is a Full Moon and is within 90% of its closest distance to Earth (perigee).
The term ‘Supermoon’ was first used by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 to describe a Full Moon that is positioned closest to the Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than a regular Full Moon.
The ‘Beaver Moon’
The Supermoon in November is traditionally called the Beaver Moon. This name has been used for centuries by various cultures, especially Indigenous tribes in North America and ancient Europeans.
• The name originated because beavers are busiest during November, preparing for winter by building dams and collecting food.
• In the 1600s, beaver hunting was also prevalent in the UK, which eventually led to their local extinction from the country’s nature.
Viewing Opportunity
To enjoy this spectacular view, clear weather is essential. It is advisable to check the weather report to find out where the sky will be clear to choose the best location for moon-gazing.
The last Supermoon of this year will be visible on December 4th.
