Trump Reignites Controversy Over Ilhan Omar’s Immigration, Suggests She ‘Should Go Back’
US President Donald Trump has once again made controversial comments regarding the immigration identity of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.
On Saturday, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, directing a message at Ilhan Omar, saying, “She should go back to her country.” Politico reported this news.
The Post and Video
Trump attached a video to his post showing Ilhan Omar giving a public speech. It is unclear when the video was recorded, but it has been circulating on right-wing social media platforms for the past few weeks.
Omar was born in Somalia and fled the country’s civil war at the age of eight. She spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before arriving in the United States in 1995. She obtained US citizenship in the year 2000.
The post was quickly amplified on social media by several of Trump’s “Make America Great Again” associates, including Laura Loomer.
History of Attacks
This is not the first recent instance—Trump has previously hinted at the idea of expelling Ilhan Omar from the country.
• September Comment: Last September, he told reporters at the White House, “I met the President of Somalia. I told him, ‘Maybe you want to take Ilhan Omar back.’ He said, ‘I don’t want her.'”
• First Term Attacks: Trump repeatedly attacked Omar during his first term, even alleging toward the end of the 2020 election that “she wants to teach us how our country should be run.”
Omar’s Response
Omar’s office did not immediately provide a comment on Trump’s latest post. However, in a radio interview on Friday, the four-term Democratic representative addressed the issue:
“I’m not concerned about these things. I cannot imagine how anyone could revoke my citizenship. I am not that eight-year-old child who ran away from war now. I am an adult, and my children are grown. I can live anywhere I want. It is truly strange to hear this ‘expel Ilhan’ talk every single day.”
